Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It's played on a smaller court (roughly a third the size of a tennis court) with a perforated plastic ball and solid paddles. The smaller court and lower net make it easier to learn while still offering plenty of depth for competitive play. Most people are rallying within their first session!
Absolutely! Beginners are always welcome at open play. Our community is incredibly friendly and experienced players love introducing newcomers to the game. Just arrive between 8:30 AM and 12:30 PM any day of the week at La Unidad Deportiva. If you want a bit more structure, we also offer free beginner lessons on Saturdays — a great place to start before jumping into open play.
Athletic clothing you can move freely in works perfectly. Court shoes or cross-trainers with good lateral support are recommended — running shoes can work, but proper court shoes reduce the risk of ankle twists. You'll also want sunscreen, water, and a hat, as San Miguel's sun can be intense. If you don't have a paddle, don't worry — other players often have extras you can borrow for your first few sessions.
We play at La Unidad Deportiva Luis H. Ducoing in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, México. The sports complex is easy to find in the city. You can use the map on our website or search for 'Unidad Deportiva Luis H Ducoing' in Google Maps to get directions.

Ideally, yes — but if you're new and don't have a paddle yet, other players usually have an extra paddle, but it's best to bring your own. Balls are usually shared among players on court. If you're planning to play regularly, investing in your own paddle is a good idea — ask experienced players for recommendations.
Yes! We offer free beginner lessons every Saturday at 10:30 AM. These sessions cover the basics — how to serve, scoring rules, kitchen rules (the non-volley zone), and general strategy. You'll go from zero knowledge to being able to enjoy a full game in just one session. To sign up, use Playtime Scheduler.
Sign Up on Playtime Scheduler →We periodically organize skill clinics for intermediate and advanced players covering topics like dinking strategy, the third-shot drop, stacking, and tournament preparation. These are announced via our WhatsApp group and on our events calendar. Some clinics may involve a small fee when led by visiting pro players or certified coaches.
The standard pickleball skill rating system goes from 1.0 (brand new) to 5.5+ (professional). Most casual club players fall between 2.5 and 4.0. If you're unsure where you fall, just join open play — experienced members are great at helping you gauge your level. We also host DUPR Days where you can get an official Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating.
Two great resources for determining your skill level are DUPR and USA Pickleball, both of which provide official skill assessments and rating tools.
We organize a variety of events throughout the year including weekly round-robins, the annual San Miguel Open tournament, DUPR-rated rating days, seasonal ladder leagues, beginner clinics, and social mixer events. All events are posted on our Google Calendar and announced in the WhatsApp group.
The San Miguel Open is our flagship annual tournament and one of the most beloved pickleball events in central Mexico. It draws players from across the region and beyond, competing across multiple skill divisions and age brackets. It's a fantastic event both to compete in and to spectate. Details are posted on our events page and WhatsApp as the date approaches.
DUPR (Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating) is the world's most accurate pickleball rating system, used globally to match players of similar skill levels. Your rating is calculated based on game results — wins, losses, and the ratings of your opponents. We host DUPR Days periodically where results are officially submitted. To participate, you need a free DUPR account at mydupr.com.
The Ladder League is a seasonal competitive format where players are ranked on a leaderboard. As you win and lose matches, your position on the ladder moves up or down. It's a great low-pressure way to track your improvement and compete consistently against players of a similar level. Registration details are announced in the WhatsApp group at the start of each season.

San Miguel de Allende is a wonderful city with a thriving expat community, and pickleball is one of the most popular activities for newcomers. Joining our WhatsApp group before you arrive is a great way to get connected early.
💬 Join our WhatsApp Group →San Miguel enjoys great weather year-round, which is one of the reasons pickleball has thrived here. The winter season (November through March) is the most vibrant, with the largest number of players as seasonal residents return. Summer months are quieter but still active. The courts are at an elevation of about 1,900 meters, so temperatures are mild even in summer.
